Märtin
and Reid win Richard Burns Memorial Rally
Rally legends Markko Märtin and Robert Reid took victory in the
inaugural Richard Burns Memorial Rally at RAF Marham.
The duo won the charity
event in memory of their friend and former World Champion Burns by a
margin of over six minutes in the works Subaru Impreza WRC2008, showing
superb pace on the tarmac stages over Saturday and Sunday. They were
joined on the podium by Tom Morris/Ken Bills in a MG Metro 6R4, and
Dick Maugher/Steve McNulty in their Ford Focus WRC.
A field of over 100 rally
cars took part in the memorial event at the Norfolk air base, watched
by thousands of fans who came to pay tribute to Englands first
and only World Rally Champion.
As well as enjoying the
action on the stages competitors, marshals and fans celebrated together
at a rally party on Saturday evening, which included a charity auction
of signed memorabilia that raised over £1500.
It is expected the event
- which was sponsored by Subaru UK and Hylton Gott Subaru and organised
by the Kings Lynn & District Motor Club (KLDMC) will have
raised a significant five-figure sum overall for the Richard Burns Foundation
and the RAF Benevolent Fund.
Robert Reid said:
It was a fantastic event for a great cause and I thoroughly enjoyed
it. It was really good to do a rally with Markko, which I have never
done before. I havent even been in a rally car for five years!
I was surprised at how much at home I felt. Markko was fantastic and
the Subaru Impreza was really good too. Although there is still probably
some development to be done to perfect it, it certainly behaves itself
and was nicely balanced. I have to thank Markko for persuading me to
do it and Subaru WRT for their support. Its been great to be out
there with all the other competitors, many of whom dont ever get
the chance to get near a works WRC car. It was the people who really
made the weekend, from all the organisers to the marshals, competitors
and spectators.
Event founder and RAF
engineer Chris Daykin said:
It was an awesome event for me, from the people to the cars to
the atmosphere and generosity. We hope everyone enjoyed it and the event
will go from strength to strength because its for a fantastic
cause.
