| The pine boxes depicted below were
made by me initially as a hobby. I started off making wooden bowls on
a lathe, but I soon wanted to move on to larger projects. I initially
looked at the furniture being sold in local shops and thought their finish
was really quite bad and I was sure that I could do better. I wanted to
produce the sort of furniture that I wanted and not what I was forced
to buy by their standardized catalogue of mass produced products - often
with the title of "Pine Effect" finish - which is a euphemism
for chipboard with a laminate finish, with hardboard backings. I buy my timber from the local wood yard, and store it in my house to acclimatize it / season it, to room temperature before making anything. No two items are the same as they are all hand made from raw materials using a variety of hand and electrical tools. I have an extensive range of tools acquired over a number of years and only produce furniture that I like, using heavy duty timber, which will stand the rigers of time unlike that crap produced by the mass market out of town shopping stores. The other thing I noticed was the finished colour of "Antique Pine", "Honey Pine" etc., all had nasty yellow finishes. I have from the outset made my own wood stains using Potassium Permanganate, to darken the wood, then rubbed down with wire wool, applying several coats of liquid wax, more wire wool, then a of coat of antique wax and finishing off with a fine wire wool rub down. Please note that none of these items are for sale. |
